The Student Process
To start it is important that you understand that NHD is a competition, therefore, there are rules and keys to success. NHDNH is here to support you in creating the best project for the competition by guiding you through these nuances.

Step 1: Determine an area of interest. Use the graphic organizer below to jump start your brainstorm of possible topics.
Step 2: Dissecting the Theme. The most crucial thing to note is that each project must directly relate and prove it's relation to an annual theme.
Step 3: Choosing a Topic. Narrow down the topic to something manageable.
Step 4: Finding a Research Question. There are good and bad research questions.
Step 5: Doing Research. Go to our website for links to primary source search engines.
Step 6: Building a Thesis. A good thesis is specific and provable.
Step 7: Choosing a Category. The category should be determined by the research. For example if they have a lot of fun tangential stories to support their thesis, perhaps a website would be best. Or if they have lots of photos, perhaps a documentary.
